The Odyssey Filming Locations and Where to Stay in Greece & Italy

Next year, director Christopher Nolan is set to release his biggest and most expensive film to date with an estimated budget of $250 million. He will be retelling Homer’s The Odyssey, which is believed to be over 2,700 years old, and one of the only remaining stories to survive the burning of the Library of Alexandria. Now considered a classic and taught in English classes around the world, The Odyssey is an important story to tell, and Nolan has big expectations to meet – especially after winning Best Picture for Oppenheimer in 2024.

With such a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, and more, The Odyssey is sure to draw in crowds. It is also expected to lead to an increase in tourism to some of the stunning locations already confirmed for filming and currently in production.

With several locations including Greece, Sicily, Turkey, Morocco and more, we wanted to do some digging to see exactly where they plan to film The Odyssey. After seeing the White Lotus effect increase travel and tourism to Hawaii, Italy & Thailand, The Odyssey is more than likely to do the same & increase popularity to these destinations. Not only that, but we got the inside scoop as to where the cast will be staying during production from our travel suppliers in Greece, and would love to share insider information with our clients and or Nolan fans.

As mentioned above, there will be a variety of locations used for The Odyssey, in multiple countries. Findlater Castle, as well as a handful of other coastal regions & ruins will be used in the UK. As well as the Yason Burnu Peninsula in Turkey & several locations in Morocco, including Marrakech, Tahnaout, Al Haouz, Essaouira, Ouarzazate & Dakhla. For this blog post though, we’re going to focus on Greece & Italy, as they will likely be the most popular spots for tourists after The Odyssey releases in July of 2026.

Sicily's Egadi Islands

Off the coast of Sicily, an archipelago called The Egadi Islands is made up of three main islands: Levanzo, Marettimo & the largest of the three, Favignana. Favignana is also known as “Goat’s Island” from when the Greeks originally named it Egusa, or “full of goats”. The Egadi Islands are thought to have been the place that inspired some of the backdrops for Greek Mythology, including Goat’s Island. According to scholars, Favignana is considered to be one of the locations where The Odyssey takes place. This will be a great choice for the movie, as it not only has historical relevance but also breathtaking scenery. With crystal clear water, dramatic rocky coastlines, and several ruins to explore, it’s definitely a hidden gem that will be in the spotlight next year.

Where to Stay: Dimora Cala del Pozzo

This boutique hotel captures the beauty of Favigiana with stunning views of the ocean while staying at a typical rural house from the mid-19th century. This isn’t just a boutique hotel, but also a fully-functioning farm. Get a taste of their natural house-made wines, honey from Sicilian black bees, fresh olives & vegetables from their on-site garden, fresh eggs from their free-range chickens and more.

Peloponnese Region

Messina is another location that will be used in The Odyssey, because it is centrally located to a few different locations that will be used for filming. Stay in Messina to see the Bell Tower and Astronomical Clock, The Cathedral of Messina, take a day trip to Taormina, Mount Etna, or even go on The Godfather tour. There is a lot to do in Messina and the surrounding areas, but if you’re looking for the actual filming locations, check out the Castle of Methoni. This 13th-century castle built by the Venetians is one of the largest castles in the Mediterranean and will likely be the backdrop for when Odessus finally returns home after the Trojan War.

Another filming location in the Peloponnese is Voidokila Beach. This unique horseshoe-shaped cove is said to be one of the “Most Instagrammable Beaches” with its bright blue water and unique shape. Nolan is set to use this as the backdrop for the highly anticipated scenes with the Cyclops Polyphemus. On foot from Voidokila Beach, you can reach Paliokastro (Nestor’s Cave), which is also said to be the actual spot where Hermes hid the cattle stolen from Apollo. Nolan will be using both locations to film his version of The Odyssey, and worth visiting both if you want to make the trek to Nestor’s Cave for the gorgeous top-down view of Voidokola Beach.

Another location being used in the Peloponnese is Acrocorinth. Acrocorinth is considered to be the largest acropolis in mainland Greece, and resides within the city of Corinth. Now uninhabited, Acrocorinth used to be one of the most strategically important strongholds in ancient Greece due to its commanding position controlling the narrow isthmus between the Ionian and Aegean seas. This ancient fortress city was a crucial trade hub that connected the Mediterranean and Black Sea routes, making it immensely wealthy and politically significant throughout its history. Corinth also holds deep religious significance as the place where the Apostle Paul established one of the first Christian communities in the 1st century CE, later writing his famous epistles to the Corinthians from Ephesus. The site's dramatic mountaintop location overlooking the ancient city below makes it an ideal backdrop for Nolan's adaptation.

Where to Stay:

According to some of our hotel representatives located in Greece, the cast will be staying in the beautiful Costa Navarino. This up-and-coming destination is located in the southwest Peloponnese and a part of the Messina region of Greece. Costa Navarino is not only a gorgeous destination, but it is focused on eco-tourism. According to Forbes, “It was developed with deep dedication to preserving Messinia’s natural environment and heritage, with conscientious actions taken to preserve the biodiversity that’s unique to the area and minimize using natural resources. The resorts in Costa Navarino all have a focus on social responsibility and sustainable tourism.”

With four resorts currently in Costa Navarino, we’re not sure exactly which one the cast is staying at, but you can’t go wrong with any of them. The nearby seaside town of Pylos is only 30 minutes from Voidokila Beach and only 15 minutes from the Castle of Methoni. With the resorts being so close to many of the filming locations, Costa Navarino is the perfect spot for the cast to rest while in Greece.

Check out the W’s Watersports Hub where you’ll find everything from snorkeling to kitesurfing. If you’re a sports lover, check out Greece’s first signature golf course, The Dunes Course & Mouratoglou Tennis Center overlooking the Ionian Sea. You can also try mountain biking, scuba diving & snorkeling, rock climbing, and various water activities. Families can also enjoy this resort with dedicated kids & teens clubs and on-site water park. Just looking to relax? Try the Anazoe Spa and lounge at one of the two pools or the Dunes Beach.

The Romanos, Costa Navarino

The Romanos is also about a 25 minute drive from Pylos, making it a great location for those looking to stay within the Costa Navarino area. They also share a lot of the amenities that the Westin has as well, because they are located right next to each other. You can use The Dunes Course & Mouratoglou Tennis Center, as well as the Anazoe Spa. This resort also has a kids club and pool, as well as sunbathing and swimming at the shared Dunes Beach. They also offer experiences like olive oil tasting, authentic village cooking, or even a wine master class.

Whether you’re interested in visiting the hidden gems of Greece and Sicily, or if you’re a Christopher Nolan fan, we think these destinations will grow in popularity from The Odyssey. They are currently in the process of filming, and it’s only a matter of time before tourists will want to visit some of the gorgeous scenery and learn about the history and mythology associated with these destinations.

Dark Sky Week is held every year during the week of the new moon in April, and in 2025, it will be held from April 21-28. This week was created to see the true beauty of the night sky by turning off all unnecessary lights worldwide and raising awareness about light pollution. Dark Sky Week was created by highschooler Jennifer Barlow back in 2003, and is recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association, the American Astronomical Society, the Astronomical League, and Sky & Telescope. Barlow wanted to create this week of observance, because she thought it was important to preserve the way that our ancestors saw the night sky and to get rid of any unnecessary lighting that is preventing us from having the same experience.
